Commercial Insurance for California Small Businesses
General liability insurance is the foundation of every commercial insurance program. It protects your business against third-party claims for bodily injury, property damage, and personal or advertising injury. If a customer slips on a wet floor, if your employee damages a client’s property on a job site, or if a competitor claims you defamed them in an ad — general liability is what pays the legal fees and settlement.
Who needs it? Almost every California small business with a physical location, customer foot traffic, or job-site exposure:
- Contractors and trades — required by most general contractors and commercial clients before work begins
- Retail shops and restaurants — landlords almost always require $1M/$2M GL as a lease condition
- Service businesses — salons, janitorial services, landscapers, IT consultants visiting client offices
- Food trucks and mobile vendors — event permits and commissary agreements typically require GL
What commercial auto covers:
- Liability for bodily injury and property damage you cause to others
- Physical damage (comprehensive and collision) to your business vehicles
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage — critical in California
- Hired and non-owned auto coverage for employees using rental or personal vehicles on company business
- Medical payments for you and your passengers regardless of fault
We work with Progressive Commercial, National Indemnity, and several specialty markets to place everything from a single contractor pickup to small fleets with DOT authority. If you’re a new motor carrier or hot-shot operator, we can help file the required filings (MCS-90, BMC-91) and get you road-legal fast.
California law requires workers’ compensation insurance for virtually all employers — even if you have just one employee, and even if that employee is part-time, seasonal, or a family member. There are very narrow exceptions for certain sole proprietors with no employees, but if anyone works for you, you need coverage.
Workers’ comp pays for:
- Medical treatment for job-related injuries and illnesses
- Temporary and permanent disability benefits for lost wages
- Death benefits for surviving dependents if an employee is killed on the job
- Legal defense costs if an employee sues over a denied claim
The penalties for non-compliance are severe. California can fine uninsured employers $10,000 or more, issue stop-work orders, and in extreme cases pursue criminal charges. The uninsured employer is also personally liable for 100% of an injured worker’s medical bills and disability payments — a single back injury can cost $100,000+.
We quote workers’ comp through SCIF, AmTrust, ICW, Berkshire Hathaway Guard, and other California-approved carriers. Rates are set per $100 of payroll by class code — clerical staff might cost $0.40 per $100, while construction trades can run $15–$25 per $100. We help you classify correctly to avoid expensive audit surprises.
A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is a one-page document that proves your business carries active insurance. Many California landlords, general contractors, and commercial clients require a COI before you can sign a lease, start a job, or even submit a bid. It’s not the policy itself — it’s proof that the policy exists and meets the required limits.
Common situations where you need a COI:
- Signing a commercial lease — landlords typically require $1M/$2M general liability with them named as additional insured
- Starting work as a subcontractor — GCs require GL and often workers’ comp COIs
- Participating in events, festivals, or farmers markets
- Applying for business licenses or permits in Santa Ana or Orange County
- Entering vendor agreements with larger corporate clients
We issue COIs fast — usually within an hour of binding your policy. We can email the certificate directly to the certificate holder (your landlord, client, or city office) and list them as additional insured if required. If your coverage needs change mid-term — new vehicles, additional locations, higher limits — we update and reissue the COI at no extra charge.
A Business Owners Policy (BOP) bundles general liability and commercial property coverage into a single, cheaper package designed specifically for small businesses. If you have a physical location — a storefront, office, salon, or restaurant — a BOP is almost always the most cost-effective way to protect both your liability exposure and your business assets.
What a typical BOP covers:
- General liability — bodily injury, property damage, and personal/advertising injury to third parties
- Commercial property — your building (if owned), equipment, inventory, furniture, tenant improvements, and signage
- Business interruption — lost income and operating expenses if a covered peril (fire, theft, etc.) temporarily closes your business
- Optional add-ons — cyber liability, equipment breakdown, spoiled goods, and employee dishonesty
We also help drivers who aren’t “high-risk” in the traditional sense but still get penalized by standard carriers: very young drivers (under 25), drivers with no prior US insurance history, and drivers who need coverage for a vehicle with a rebuilt or salvage title.
BOPs are typically 10–20% cheaper than buying general liability and property coverage separately. Most carriers also offer multi-policy discounts when you bundle a BOP with commercial auto or workers’ comp. We quote BOPs across multiple admitted carriers — Travelers, Hartford, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, and more — so you see every option, not just one.
Because our agency owner also operates a used car dealership, this is a natural, authentic specialty for us. We understand the unique risks of the dealer business — from test-drive accidents to lot theft to regulatory compliance — because we live them every day.
Dealer insurance programs we write:
- Garage liability — covers bodily injury and property damage arising from your dealership operations, including test drives and customer vehicles on the premises
- Dealer bonds — California requires every licensed dealer to carry a surety bond. We issue and renew bonds fast so your DMV license stays current
- Lot coverage / open lot insurance — protects your inventory against theft, vandalism, fire, and weather damage while vehicles are on the lot
- Garagekeepers coverage — covers customer vehicles left in your care for service, detailing, or repair
- Dealer plate insurance — covers vehicles driven under dealer plates for test drives, transport, and demo purposes
We work with PRIMECARS and several specialty dealer markets that understand the California DMV and Bureau of Automotive Repair requirements. Whether you’re a new independent dealer in Santa Ana or an established operator expanding to multiple locations, we build a program that protects your inventory, your license, and your livelihood.
